Written by Claudia Souto, “Come Back” a new soap opera on TV Globo at 7pm, premieres on September 30th. Set in the fictional neighborhood of Vila Cambucá, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, the plot is surrounded by possible stories .
“The point of greatest identification with the public is that we are bringing in this soap opera stories that could happen to the person next to you on the bus, to the person you pass on the street or even to yourself”, says the author in a press conference accompanied by CNN .
According to Souto, it is from the perspective of surprises and challenges common to human daily life that the production talks to those on the other side of the screen.
“I think that, right away, this is the first connection, a feeling of ‘I could be in that situation’. And this has a lot to do with family relationships or also people’s work context”, he adds.
With artistic direction by André Câmara, the serial, starring black protagonists is described as a work of achievements and the price we are willing to pay for them.
Humor and disputes also mix in scenarios with different social classes. “These are stories of the people that she is bringing to the forefront,” says André.
“Our challenge is how to tell this story in a light, fun and colorful way. We looked for these aesthetic references in the suburbs themselves. They come from the people. We went to Madureira, Marechal Hermes – regions in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. [Buscamos] the warmth of the people, the cultures”, he guarantees.
Suburban plurality
The idea of contextualizing “Volta Por Cima” in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro comes from the fact that it is connected to suburbs all over the country. “It has more or less the same language, we ‘get’ that we are talking to everyone,” says Souto.
“That’s why we use the concept of suburbs, not suburbia. It’s plural because it speaks to the whole of Brazil. The soap opera talks, above all, about dreams, goals and turning things around. I would say that’s the main phrase. It’s the challenge of the whole of Brazil,” said André.
“The image creates the imaginary. I believe that making this soap opera is taking another step in the construction of a more Brazilian imaginary, a more democratic imaginary and more in harmony with the IBGE figures”, he concludes.
