The first selection with Best Hotels in Portugal for the Michelin Guide distributed from one to three keys to 55 properties across the country. In all, two hotels received the maximum distinction of three Michelin keys. Another 13 won two keys and 40 received a key.
The keys system is similar to the stars granted to restaurants, but with different evaluations criteria. The five criteria are:
- The hotel must be an open door to the destination;
- The hotel must have excellence in inner design and architecture;
- The hotel must maintain quality and consistency in service, comfort and maintenance;
- The hotel must be coherence between the level of experience and the price paid;
- The hotel must have uniqueness, personality and authenticity.
The inaugural selection of the Michelin Chaves in Portugal highlighted from properties in the capital Lisbon to hotels on Madeira Island. There are boutique hotels from international networks, palaces and hotels, which are distributed in both urban centers, alongside beaches and even in wine and rural areas.
Chaves categories reveal different aspects and sensations in hotels. They are divided as follows, according to the guide:
- 1 Michelin key : Indicates a very special stay. It is a jewel, with its own character and personality;
- 2 Keys Michelin : indicate an exceptional stay. It is a place that deserves a deviation, where a memorable experience is guaranteed;
- 3 Keys Michelin : It is the maximum distinction, which indicates a unique stay, with incomparable comfort and hospitality. Put the hotel among the most notable and extraordinary in the world.
Highlights with three keys in Portugal
Of the 55 hotels on the list, two received the maximum distinction of three keys. One is in the Algarve, while another is in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, in the Lisbon Metropolitan Region.
The first is the Vila Vita Parc in the village of Porches. There are 203 rooms, suites and apartments and six private villas – all accommodation have balconies and the villas have private pools.
The hotel spreads at 22 hectares of gardens, located by the ride of cliffs on an isolated beach. Among the amenities there is golf course, signed spa, beach club, six bars and ten restaurants, including the Ocean crowned with two Michelin stars and led by chef Hans Neuner.
The other property with three keys is in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. This is Le Penha Long Resort part of the Ritz-Carlton collection, which was once the residence of the Portuguese royal family.
The complex has 204 rooms, all with a view to the surrounding saw. Seven restaurants are housed there, with two of them carrying a Michelin star each LAB by Sergi Arola which offers tasting menus; and the Midori which combines Japanese cuisine with Portuguese flavors. The property also has a golf course, an old monastery and a 14th century chapel.
Other highlights in Portugal
A total of 13 hotels received two Michelin keys in the inaugural team in the country. They are spread in emblematic regions: besides the capital and Porto, there are addresses on Madeira Island, Douro, Alentejo and Algarve, for example.
Among the names is the Six Senses Douro Valley in the Douro, a region known for the terraces that border the river, one of the symbols of Portuguese viticulture. With more than 70 accommodation, the hotel has panoramic views for landscapes around. Installed on an old farm, the focus focuses on well-being, one of the brand’s DNAs.
Another highlight is the Red Melides in the coastal alentejo. The accommodation is quite intimate, with only 13 accommodation, and combines Spanish and traditional designs of Alentejo. Those behind the endeavor is designer Christian Louboutin.
On Madeira Island, one of the two -keys selected hotels is the The Reserve in Funchal. It is inside the Hotel Savoy Palace – which has a key – and has 40 accommodations, 14 are suites with private pools. Transfers offered by the hotel can be made aboard Rolls-Royce.

Already the 40 hotels with a key in the guide are spread across the country. In addition to Lisbon, Porto, Funchal and Alentejo, there are addresses also in cities known to Brazilians, such as Aveiro, Compit, Faro and Fatima.
THE Bairro Alto Hotel and the Hotel Pousada de Lisboa in Praça do Comércio, there are two names that appear in the capital. THE The Yeatman which has a cellar with over 30,000 bottles, is one of the highlights of Vila Nova de Gaia, right in front of Porto. In Monsaraz, Alentejo, the São Lourenço do Barrocal It’s another name with a Michelin key.
