These are the goals of COP26, according to the president of the event

Alok Sharma – British lawyer and president of COP26 – said he wants the conference to reach agreements on a number of goals. Are they:

  • Keep the 1.5°C goal alive, which could involve anything to zero carbon dioxide emissions by mid-century and cut greenhouse gas emissions more aggressively this decade.
  • Establish a date to end the use of charcoal, something the G20 leaders could not agree on in Rome. Leaders talk about ending “incessant” coal, which means that some coal can still be used if they manage to use it without emitting greenhouse gases.
  • Offer $100 billion in climate finance annually — what rich nations had agreed to do from 2020 to help developing countries transition to low-carbon economies and adapt to the impacts of the crisis.
  • Make all cars sold zero pollutants in 14 to 19 years.
  • End and reverse deforestation by the end of the decade, since forests are an essential part of removing carbon from the atmosphere.
  • Reduce methane emissions, a powerful gas with a heating capacity 80 times greater than carbon dioxide. The US and Europe promise to reduce 30% of methane emissions.
