These new emojis may soon arrive on your smartphone

If you’ve ever wanted to high-five someone in your group messages, you may soon be in luck.

A new “Pushing Hand” gesture that looks like a high-five is on the list of possible new emojis to be released later this year. Also includes: a shaky face, a piece of ginger and a hair stick for styling locks.

New emojis could arrive later this year

Emojipedia, a popular emoji reference site, released sample images on Wednesday for more than a dozen new emojis that have been submitted for approval by the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization that oversees global standards for emojis and new releases.

The preliminary list also includes maracas, a long-awaited pink heart, and a Khanda, a traditional symbol of the Sikh faith. The potential additions come as pressure has increased in recent years for emojis to be more inclusive.

“While some may not be included, most submitted for approval are historically confirmed,” said Keith Broni, editor-in-chief of Emojipedia, in a blog post accompanying the new images, released ahead of World Emoji Day, celebrated next year. Sunday (17).

Final approval by Unicode is expected to take place in September. The emoji would be released as software updates for major platforms from late 2022 through 2023.

Potential new emojis

Broni emphasized that the images released by Emojipedia are previews and are subject to change or final approvals, but he said that all the emojis the group had previewed in the past year — such as the pregnant man — ended up being included in the final release.

The new options come as the use of emojis on Twitter is at record levels, according to an analysis released by Emojipedia. Their data indicated that emoji usage this month and last month was “the highest instances of emojis per tweet since our records began in July 2011.”
