Thessaloniki: Agreement of six chambers for closer economic relations in the Western Balkans

The representatives of the six chambers, which signed today, in Thessaloniki, a memorandum of cooperation, “see” a higher potential for the economic relations between Greece, the Greek North and the western Balkans, in terms of both trade and investment, as well as tourism.

The memorandum, which will gradually enter into force on April 1, was signed before the Deputy Minister of Interior (Macedonia-Thrace), Stavros Kalafatis, at the initiative of the Hellenic-Serbian Chamber of Northern Greece and will take three levels of action: the exchange of business missions in sectoral exhibitions of Greece, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro, the establishment and strengthening of an office of the Hellenic-Serbian Chamber in Serbia and the realization of business missions between the countries, targeted by sector.

The memorandum bears the signatures of the presidents of the Hellenic-Serbian Chamber, Costa Georgakou, the Chamber of Vojvodina (Serbia), Bosko Vucurevic, the Republic of Serbia in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Perov) ), Dragan Kostic, while absent – in terms of physical presence, due to Covid – but present … through their signature, were the heads of the chambers of Banja Luka (Bosnia) and Montenegro. The signing of the memorandum comes a day after the meeting in Belgrade of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic.

“By signing this memorandum, our existing relationship with Serbia and the Western Balkans for the last six years is formalized and the goal is to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, as Greece needs to intensify its relationship with its countries. areas and vice versa “said Mr. Georgakos and added that the Greek-Serbian trade, which currently amounts to 650 million euros, could well exceed 1 billion, as we are gradually entering the post-Covid era. “Tourism from Serbia, for example, is constantly growing and it is estimated that Serbian tourists, who could reach 1 million this year, could leave around 1 billion euros in Greece. Given that 80% -90% of them visit Northern Greece, the benefits for the region become obvious, and trade in 2021 increased by 15% in the midst of a pandemic, compared to 2020. As far as Bosnia is concerned, the trade balance is very very low and there is a prospect of significant growth “, pointed out Mr. Georgakos.

Bosko Vucurevic, for his part, noted that “there is a lot of room for investment and co-operation between Greece and Serbia” and described the agreement as a new beginning. “We are here to prepare for the future of business,” he said.

During his greeting, the Deputy Minister of Interior, Stavros Kalafatis, stressed that “Thessaloniki, Macedonia and Thrace must be repositioned in their wider (geographical) neighborhood, on the map of our future”, while adding that this goal is part of framework of the policy of the Mitsotakis government, which has a strong developmental, philanthropic and pro-business character and sign. “We firmly believe that the collaborations of the chambers can create a new development perspective,” he underlined.
