From the 1st of May, when the cruise ship “Celestyal Crystal” will “moor” in the port of Thessaloniki for the first time this year, the cooperation of the Thessaloniki Port Authority (OLTH) and the private investor with Fraport Greece and the ministry will be activated. This cruise ship, which uses Thessaloniki as a “home port”, will approach the city 30 times in 2022, starting from May Day, and its passengers will benefit -among other things- from the possibilities that offered by the aforementioned agreement.
Based on this, the check-in and the transfer of the luggage of the travelers, who will end up from the airport “Macedonia” in the port, in order to board the cruise, will be done by Fraport and OLTH. The same will apply to the luggage of cruise ship passengers, who will disembark at the port and continue their journey from the airport “Macedonia”.
This year the cruise season will open in Thessaloniki next Saturday, February 5, much earlier than ever, with the arrival -at 7.30 in the morning- of the ship “Viking Sky”, which will depart at 10 pm for Kusadasi Turkey (in 2021 the first arrival was on June 29). In total for 2022 (based on the posted data, obtained by APE-MPE from the website of OLTH), 55 cruise ship arrivals have already been confirmed in Thessaloniki (with 15 different ships), compared to 17 in 2021 and only six in the pre-pandemic 2019.
In the meantime, small-scale improvement works will be carried out in and around the port’s passenger station building to accommodate the cruise passengers. The announced large-scale interventions in the station building (old customs office) are planned to be ready at the same time as the other mandatory investments, which are included in the relevant program of the private investor in the port. The building, the foundation stone of which was entered in 1910, is considered to be of great importance: with a length of 200 meters, width 25 and an area of ​​12,000 sq.m., it dominates the area of ​​the western entrance of Thessaloniki, with cruise ships “mooring” behind it, but Significant static support is needed, with a budget of € 20 million.
