The case of the 59-year-old Serb, who was arrested in Greece on a European warrant by the prosecuting authorities of Croatia, accused of war crimes 31 years ago, during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia, was postponed until next week.
The 59-year-old was arrested last month in Evzones, Kilkis, as he was coming for a holiday in Greece with his family. Croatia is requesting his extradition and the Appeals Council of Thessaloniki will decide on this request.
The procedure was supposed to be held today in court, but it was finally postponed, following a request he submitted in order to secure a lawyer, as he appeared without a lawyer (citing financial inability).
According to the Croatian prosecution documents, the wanted person is accused of being part of a military unit that destroyed infrastructure and executed civilians in the Croatian settlements of Voicin and Hum (between 19/8 and 14/12 2021), which he denies. “I took part in the war, but I didn’t kill anyone,” he told the Council judges, arguing that if extradited to Croatia he would not receive a fair trial.
He remains in custody until the Council meets again.
