Thessaloniki: Traders expect an increase in turnover

Candles, buns, chocolate eggs, meat and gifts for godmothers and christenings are high on the “agenda” of the Easter markets and in Thessaloniki. The traffic in the stores is “warming up” gradually with the commercial world being optimistic that in the next 24 hours the Easter turnover will increase.

Many consumers today, on Holy Wednesday, look in the shop windows and do market research for the Easter table, while the merchants – for their part – hope that by Holy Saturday, with the influx of gifts and bonuses in the bank accounts, they will fill their coffers.

The lamb and the goat … shrunk

With prices on lambs and goats starting from 9.99 euros and reaching 15 euros, the butchers in Kapani try to “entice” the residents in order to procure the meat for the Easter spit.

It seems that most consumers this year have chosen to “shrink” the amount of lambs that will be at the festive table. According to the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Butchers, Savva Kesidis, orders are reduced in the butchers of Thessaloniki compared to last year and the year before last.

“We understand the world and the problems it faces with precision. Energy is doubled and tripled in price and orders are limited this year. Most choose to reduce the quantity they buy in lambs and meat,” he told the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency. Mr. Kesidis.

He adds, however, that in urban centers sales are declining “in whole lambs and skewers. The percentage of consumers who buy a whole lamb or goat is small”.

Most consumers in Kapani and in the shops of the center of Thessaloniki indulge in “safari” prices in order to find the best and cheapest in meat, fruits and vegetables, but also in eggs, white or red painted.

Stuffed buns and Easter cookies “leave” for the village!

Simple buns with all kinds of fillings, Easter cookies, chocolate eggs, syrups, cheese cake with mastic aroma and any other kind of dessert are included in the packages and are prepared together with the Easter excursionists to leave for the … village to accompany the Easter table.

In the confectioneries of the city the traffic is especially increased with the Thessalonians buying sweets to offer to both godfathers and godmothers but also to those who visit with the Resurrection.

“Easter eggs and buns for godmothers and godparents are in great demand these days,” the confectioner, Pepi Beza, told APE – MPE, adding, however, that the prices of sweets have increased this year, due to the increases that have preceded purchase prices of raw materials.

“The price of sugar has risen by more than 50%, the prices of butter and flour have risen and all this raises the final cost of sweets and the bun. Last year, consumers found a bun with chocolate from 10 to 15 euros maximum and this year from 15 euros and up “, adds Ms. Beza.

Pink papers on illegally parked cars. of the center and controls for trafficking

With continuous checks and calls, the Traffic Directorate and the Municipal Police of Thessaloniki are trying to put “order” in the traffic of the city and especially in the illegally parked vehicles on main roads.

In Tsimiski, the Traffic Police and the Municipal Police constantly “whistle” in order for drivers to remove their vehicles, while calls are cut for those who have illegally parked both on main roads and in controlled parking spaces.

“We have adjusted the hours to the new data of the Easter days, so that we are out on the streets for more hours and with more forces. We move in three shifts so that there is no gap in the police and we will continue until Holy Saturday,” said the authorized councilor of Thessaloniki, responsible for Municipal Police issues, Dimitris Daglis.

At the same time, checks of the Municipal Police with the “Panthers” are carried out, after consultation with the new general police director of Thessaloniki, Christos Bouloumbasis, for the trafficking.
