Peta – people for the moral treatment of animals is urging the Minister of Business and Trade of the United Kingdom, Jonathan Reynolds, to update the shoe label regulations so that wool is no longer grouped in the “textile” category. PETA says the UK government must amend the regulations in order to make it clear to consumers that wool, as well as the skin, comes from the body of an animal. While the skin has distinct, widely recognized symbols, PETA argues that wool, despite being also an animal product, is categorized as a “textile product”. This icon, which represents woven fabric, is usually attached to herbal or synthetic materials such as cotton, hemp or polyester. Peta argues that the grouping of wool beneath this symbol is “misleading” and calls on the government to define a separate symbol to announce its animal origin.
