‘They are not refugees, they are invited’, says the Polish president and asks for money as ‘given to Turkey’

The European Union’s support for the countries managing the refugee crisis in Ukraine is “natural”, Polish President Andrei Duda said on Tuesday, comparing the prehistory created by Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Turkey six years ago.

Duda held a joint press conference in Bucharest with his Romanian counterpart Klaus Ioannis at the Kotroceni Presidential Palace.

“When Turkey was hit by the Syrian refugee crisis, when millions of Syrians, Iraqis and Turkish citizens came to seek refuge there, the European Union allocated billions of euros to support Turkey. I think it is natural that the same support should be given to countries. “I believe that both the European Commission and the European Council will take the necessary decisions in the near future and that this assistance will be available to us as soon as possible.” said the Polish president, according to the official translation into Romanian.

He said Romania and Poland are accepting people seeking refuge from the war in Ukraine.

“They are not refugees, they are our guests. We welcome them to our homes, to our cities, to our villages. Wherever they go, they can find a quiet place. People come wholeheartedly and give them gifts and money. But we deeply believe “Aid will come to our countries, help from the European Union in the first place, which is natural,” the Polish head of state added.
