Stories of “Lifelighter”
«I worked, I paid, I ran. But for whom? For what? I stopped when I realized that I was forgetting who I was. Then, after a series of failures, I gave up everything. It was not easy, but this allowed me to free myself from the masks I wore daily and to reconnect with the body, with reality, with natural rhythms, with silence ». Roman Zancarliwho is 26 years old today, when he decided to live in a van he did not pass it very well. He had had problems with the work, had difficulty paying the rent and was no longer with his child’s mother: “At the beginning it was a necessity. I had lost everything and I didn’t really know where to stay and how to go on. Then I started understanding that, inside that life raminga, there was something that resembled me. No obligations, no noise, no distraction. Only the essentials. I wanted to build something that was mine and my daughter, a few square meters, where she could be quiet and serene ». And so Roman has lived on a van for a few months, he runs by keeping Verona as a city city: «I have a residence there and it is there that my adoptive parents and daughter live. Lately I am spending a lot of time in Spain, but even if I move, I try to return to Verona frequently ». With the work he arranges himself: «I am a courier, the waiter, the driver: I lean on the temporary agencies and eventually always jumps out something to do. Then lately my social channels work well and something also enters from there: on Instagram and YouTube I tell my life in the van and this thing is gear. ” Roman certainly does not live in luxury (“I miss the hot shower and the washing machine”), but there is great curiosity in discovering his days, so much so that in September a docufilm even comes out on his history: Romanproduced by Rea Film.

Those who live like him, today they call them Lifelighterpeople who want to stay light, choosing a minimalist lifestyle, nomadic lifestyle, without being ballast from material goods: they are often traveling, with works that manage remotely, just to pay for costs for food, accommodation and little else.
In other words, less weight, more space for experience, as the Italian-Switzerland has chosen to be the artist CIRIACA ERREborn in 1973, who started his journey in search of utopia and humanity: “As the philosopher Henry David Thoreau said, I wanted to suck all the marrow of life and not to discover, on the point of death, not to have lived. For two years, two weeks and two days, she traveled the world with my backpack: «I left everything I had: a husband, two big children that I love deeply, my beloved cat, friends, a beautiful house and the frenetic rhythm of a life between London and Switzerland. However, I needed to feed the fire that I felt inside, what keeps us alive and that makes us savor freedom ». And so three years ago he left at the dawn of the Earth day, on April 22, 2022, on foot, without money, without any certainty: “When you revolve your life, you cannot go back: you can only go on”. In this time it was welcomed by indigenous people in the Amazon forest, by community, hermits, refugees, Buddhist monks, strangers from very different countries and cultures. And while he let go: “I lost the judgment, perfectionism, the need to please, the fear of disappointing, the belief of having to be always perfect”. A nice reflection on itself, but, going on prosaic, how do you keep yourself? “I activated a crowdfunding and then I went on without pretensions, with gratitude, towards those who offered me a apple, to those who gave me a glass of water, to those who housed me one night”.

More “strategic” the organization of Daniela De Girolamo41 years old, from Reggio Calabria, who has lived on a camper for 7 years. – Although, as he wants to clarify: “I don’t think, I do not plan, I do not project and I live very well, in the here and now, without worries for the future and without heating on the past” – he knows how to earn and how to organize the revenues: “Let’s say that between insurance and various maintenance, I have to calculate on average a cost -life of 300 euros per month. I rented my house where I lived before and this income guarantees me the base. It is then added that in these two years I have written two books, I have activated social channels that work and sell my help and organization services for those who, like me, want to give up everything and go to live in a camper: do consultations, advice and open useful doors. Every now and then I allow myself a meal at the restaurant, but I don’t go to the hairdresser except for cutting and I no longer do the reconstruction of the nails. I only buy what I need: I need a couple of good trekking shoes, shorts and two dresses, nothing more ». And to those who ask her if you don’t think about tomorrow, do not hesitate: «I live in the here and now, in the present moment without worries for the future, without hearing the past. They tell me I’m not placing the bases for retirement. But who says it will be pension? Who says that we will live up to there? I can’t help but live just for fear that something later happens to me ». And, speaking of fears, isn’t it afraid of solitude? «Loneliness is my best ally and in any case I am always with Spritz, my dog, trusted travel companion. You can be alone with a husband next to a disco with a thousand people during a family lunch. I happened to feel alone in some relationships, but today I’m not, I’m fine ».

And understand how well and how it is often the starting point is often: “I was ending the university and I asked myself: if my life was a work of art would I see it? I replied no, he was not exciting nor did he have particular stories to tell. Then I said to myself: I go to collect stories and create mine, and, in the meantime, I try to understand what it means to live a beautiful life – and then really live it. I chose to do it on foot because I wanted the slowness to be the key to the reading of important encounters, to which to dedicate the right time, without haste », so Nicolò GuarreraPieroad on social media, left Vicenza and started five years ago, on foot, and has reached distant places such as Argentina, Peru, the United Arab Emirates and Australia: “Returning? In these years several things have changed: I will see if it makes sense to recover the step or if it is possible to stay to mine ».
