As it conveys the Italian Ansa news agency, the public prosecutor’s office of Padua requested the annulment of the birth certificates of thirty children, in which the municipality recognized the existence of two parents of the same sex. One of the cases, as it became known, is going to be discussed in court next year November.
The children, who are up to six years old, have until now borne the surnames of both members of the couple. These are the “Rainbow Families”which have been at the center of political controversy in Italy.
On the one hand, many center-left mayors signed birth certificates, recognizing the members of same-sex couplen as equal parents.
On the other hand, the government of Giorgia Meloni and now the public prosecutor’s office of Padua consider that under the current legislation children can be registered in the municipal registers only by the biological parent, whose surname they should also bear. They remind, moreover, that the Areios Pagos of Italy has also referred to the whole issue, underlining that there is no law that provides for something different.
For their part, the Rainbow Families of Italy, according to the Athens News Agency, consider that with this new line their children are being harmed because their psychological balance is not recognized as a priority and their basic needs are not met.
