Captain of the ship Avant Garde Gennady Gavrilov, arrested in Sri Lanka five years ago, returned to Ukraine. This is reported by Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba on Twitter.
The Foreign Minister noted that Gavrilov had been held in Sri Lanka since 2016 “on false charges.”
At the end of May 2021, the court acquitted him, and now he is already in Odessa.
Gennady Gavrilov was the captain of the ship Avant Garde, which was under the management of the Sri Lankan company. The vessel was used to ensure safety at sea and to prevent an attack by pirates. In this regard, there were firearms and ammunition on board.
- In October 2015, when the ship was at anchor outside the territorial waters of Sri Lanka, Gavrilov was awaiting permission to enter the port, but Avant Garde was detained by local authorities.
- On June 23, 2016, the Ukrainian captain was arrested for smuggling weapons into the country. He was forbidden to leave the state and for a long time no charges were brought against him.
- In 2017, Gavrilov recorded a video appeal to the Ukrainian authorities with a request to facilitate his release. He also talked about health problems (eye cataracts and heart problems) and the need for surgery.
