They lost their lives from the cold trying to return to their country illegally

Four Syrian refugees, two women and two children, die of cold in mountainous eastern Lebanon as they try to reach Syria illegally, announced a local official and broadcast the Lebanese national news agency ANI.

The four refugees, whose traces were lost three days ago, were found in the highlands of the Ainata-Oyoun Orgos area in eastern Lebanon, said a source in Lebanon’s civil protection service.

The governor of the Baalbek-Hermel region, Bashir Honder, clarified via Twitter that the refugees “died due to the coldAnd highlighted the “painstaking efforts of the civil protection service, the army and the security forces” to locate them.

An investigation will be conducted into a Lebanese man who accompanied them to determine if he was a trafficker, the governor added.

The four refugees were “on their way to Syria,” said a source in the civil protection service.

«During the trip, the storm began, all four (refugees) got out of the car that transported them to continue on foot before losing their tracks “. The two children were 7 and 8 years old, the same source clarified.

According to ANI, citing the local director of the Civil Protection Service, Bilal Raad, the “big cold” is the cause of their death.

Lebanon and Syria share a 330-kilometer border, which is punctured by many illegal crossings.

Since the start of the war in Syria 10 years ago, many Syrians have crossed the border between the two countries, often resorting to traffickers.

People who have fled Syria illegally, including many refugees, victims of the war, are afraid to return to the country from the official border guards.

In January 2018, 17 Syrians died from the cold trying to reach Lebanon. And in 2015 a man and a child from Syria died when a strong snowstorm swept Lebanon.

The war in Syria has led to the deportation of more than five million people, 1.5 million of whom live in Lebanon, according to local authorities. Less than a million are registered with the UN as refugees fleeing the conflict in neighboring Syria.
