“They took me to a room with a samovar and an investigator.” A new criminal case was opened against Navalny

A new criminal case was opened against Alexei Navalny, a political opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by the Instagram of an opposition Russian politician-prisoner.

They clarified that Navalny was charged with insulting judge Vera Akimova during the trial in another criminal case, but it was not specified how he insulted her.

According to Putin’s opponent, on May 24, a guard came for him, “took him to the room where the samovar stood, cups for tea” – and an investigator for “especially important cases” from the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. He told Navalny that 21 investigators were in charge of his three cases.

Navalny’s account writes: an employee of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation told the prisoner that he “stole all donations” from people to the Anti-Corruption Foundation, and also “encouraged citizens to refuse to perform their civic duties.”

  • On January 17, 2021, Navalny returned to Russia after being poisoned by Novichok and receiving treatment in Germany: the oppositionist was immediately detained and sentenced on February 2 to 3.5 years in prison.
  • There were protests in his support, which were easily suppressed by the regime; thousands of people were detained.
