“They went to make a fuss but, if Athens keeps all 100, it will start a vendetta” says the president of Croatia

The president of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic, took a position on the bloody incidents caused by the Dinamo Zagreb hooligan in New Philadelphia, which resulted in murder of 29-year-old Michalis Katsouris.

Mr Milanovic said that Dinamo Zagreb fans had gone to Greece to stage episodes, stressing that this was something he could not support.

As Zoran Milanovic also said, the Greek Police have the right to detain them before they are charged “for five days. This time period is now expiring. It is about 100 people and we do not know if they will all be remanded in custody. Regardless of because they went to Athens, they went to cause trouble and this is something I cannot support, the behavior of the police is strange. They do not cease to be citizens and have rights”,

However, he emphasized that “the circumstances under which a life was lost have not been clarified, are not known».

He added: “If the Greek government could hold all 100 of them through some kind of “artificial detention”, this would have elements of a vendetta or attribution of collective responsibility. I expect that very soon those really responsible will be held accountable».

“Now most of them must be released. If they detain them all, it’s de facto martial law, you can’t detain them all“, concluded.

It is recalled that, earlier today, another 40 hooligans were sentenced to pre-trial detention after their apologies (39 Croats and one Greek), while yesterday, Friday, another 30 were remanded in custody, 28 of whom are Croats.

The Croatian president was also asked about the open letter sent to the media by the parents of the arrested Croats, asking for the release of their children.

As he said, he has been informed about the letter, but as he said, we should not involve the parents. Those arrested, he said, “are adults, their parents did not send them there. They went it alone and some will be held accountable for it. But not all 100 people.”
