Things to know before becoming a brunette

Among the stars there is a certain desire to have brown hair. From Karlie Kloss to Hailey Bieber and Billie Eilish some of the hardened blondes have turned to brunette, a more intense color and certainly more wintery. A very rich shade with a gloss finish.

A trend that also comes from social media, since generation Z decreed on TikTok that “All the stars and cool girls are turning brown”, while blondes have been defined cheugy, viral word that as defined by the New York Times indicates “someone who is out of style or who tries too hard,” citing the inventor of the term, Hallie Cain.

Things to know before becoming a brunette

The important thing, before making the drastic change, is to rely on the advice of an expert colorist who knows how to create a tailor-made shade. In fact, it is not enough to say brown, because a single dark shade could darken some faces, making some subtle shades lighter or simply warmer necessary to make the color more natural and multidimensional.

The transition is best done gradually so as to make the change less impactful and stress the hair less.

While brunettes may require less frequent touch-ups than blondes or bolder shades, all chemically colored hair still needs care and attention. “The best way to treat freshly dyed hair at home is to always use a professional color protection shampoo and conditioner,” says Lucy Green, colorist at London’s Larry King Hair salon in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s also important to avoid using too much heat to extend its life.”

Star colorist Tracey Cunningham says the ‘grown roots’ trend could be a general shift towards a less demanding hair color aesthetic. “Hair is almost always darker at the roots and a little lighter at the tips, so this trend is basically a low-maintenance color,” she told Refinery. Also, if you let your hair get darker gradually, there is no real shock.
