The third death from dengue this year was confirmed in Bahia. According to the state Department of Health (Sesab), as of February 18, 2024, 8,674 probable cases of the disease had been reported.
Sesab had already detailed that the other two deaths had been registered in Caetité and Jacaraci. The third death was registered in the city of Piripá, but the date was not reported by the department.
Also according to the survey carried out in the Disease Notification and Notification System (Sinan), Bahia has 13 municipalities experiencing a dengue epidemic. Another eight are on alert or at risk.
As a strategy to combat the mosquito that transmits dengue, the aedes aegypti, cities in Bahia now rely on Ultra Low Volume (UBV), popularly known as fumarcê. The service consists of spraying insecticides to eliminate most of the adult mosquitoes present in the region.
The strategy is initially aimed at: Wanderley, Lajedão, Morro do Chapéu, Salvador, Piripá, Encruzilhada, Bonito, Feira de Santana, Jacaraci and Juazeiro.
The Secretary of Health of Bahia, Roberta Santana, points out that “fumace is what we call the last method to be used, we resort to it when other control methods are not sufficiently effective or viable”, she commented.
In the capital of Bahia, smoke cars circulate in neighborhoods where Carnival took place. The route covers the neighborhoods of Barra, Ondina, Garcia, Campo Grande, Nordeste de Amaralina and Itapuã.
Ana Paula Matos, vice-mayor and head of the Municipal Secretariat of Salvador (SMS), highlights the important record of a 54% reduction in probable dengue cases until February 15th, when compared to the same period in 2023 only in the capital . Confirmed cases also show a significant decrease, there were 453 in the same period last year, compared to 154 in 2024.
“We were protagonists of the largest mass event in the country with a large number of people, and we will continue to set an example when it comes to permanent, preventive and post-operational work. In this sense, these activities on the Carnival circuits are fundamental, because we eliminate mosquitoes, using the smoke car for this purpose. In addition, during this week inspection activities will also be carried out in health units, places of education and places with large circulation of people, such as transfer stations, subways and sea stations to combat the mosquito that transmits arboviruses”, he stated.
