Third dose, according to Israeli data increases protection from Covid

Yes: from the data we have available, it seems that the third dose of the anti Covid vaccine is really effective in preventing the disease better. In a few days it will be published on New England Journal of Medicine a first study on Israeli data, which kicked off the recall program on August 1.

But the Israeli health ministry report, which was released in late August, shows that the third dose reduced the risk more than tenfold to contract Covid two weeks after the vaccine.

The effect against severe disease was even more significant: the risk was reduced by 15 times. The authors, however, warned that the result is not yet completely reliable, because very few patients have developed the serious disease and because the study covered a limited period of time.

There is also another retrospective study from Yale University, in pre print, based on data from an Israeli health insurance: according to the results, the third dose of the vaccine halves (48% less) the chance of being positive after the first week following the injection and reduces it again (up to 70%) after the second. Even in this case, however, the researchers emphasize the limited numbers of the study.

The appeal, therefore, is a great tool to increase the defense against the virus, but scholars still don’t know how long the protection lasts.

As for the possible side effects, the data are still too limited and it is difficult to give a definitive answer, but since the most vaccination-related problems occur shortly after the vaccine, if there were any risks, they probably would have already emerged.

in the meantime Lazio starts this week already with the administration of the third dose. The first to receive it will be transplant patients, then the document of the ministry will arrive which, after the green light of Aifa, will indicate the modalities with which to proceed. As recommended by experts, priority will be given to “people with immune frailty”, to “cancer and transplant patients”. Also with regard to the rest of the country, the circular from the ministry is awaited.
