Third meeting has ‘small breakthrough’ on humanitarian corridors, says Ukraine

The third round of talks between Russia and Ukraine ended with “small positive developments” on the issue of humanitarian corridors for refugees and supplies to some cities, according to Ukrainian negotiators.

Even so, according to the Ukrainians, the talks did not lead to an outcome that “significantly improves the situation”. The two sides will continue negotiations on a ceasefire, negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak said in a video statement.

According to Russian state media, negotiations began around 12:20 pm on Monday (7), Brasília time, in Belarus.

The Reuters news agency reported that members of the Russian delegation hope that further attempts to carry out the humanitarian corridors will be made soon, but that there is no prospect of further talks sealing the end of the war.

Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said the negotiations “are not easy” and “it is too early to talk about anything positive”.

Previous talks took place on February 28 and March 3, but no permanent ceasefire was agreed.

After the two rounds, a humanitarian corridor and a temporary suspension of hostilities were set in some cities surrounded by Russia, such as Mariupol in southern Ukraine, so that refugees could leave and supplies for residents could be delivered.

The measure, however, failed in the three attempts carried out, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with the Ukrainians accusing the Russian army of continuing bombings in the region.

Russian chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said the two sides would discuss “the same issues, political agreements, international humanitarian issues and military agreements” as last week’s talks, including evacuation routes.

understand the conflict

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia attacked the Eastern European country. At dawn this Thursday (24), Russian forces began to bomb several regions of the country – follow the repercussion live on CNN.

Hours earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized a “special military operation” in the Donbas region (eastern Ukraine, where the breakaway regions of Luhansk and Donetsk are located, which he recognized as independent).

What followed, however, was an attack on almost the entire Ukrainian territory, with explosions in several cities, including the capital Kiev. According to Ukrainian authorities, dozens of deaths were confirmed in the armies of both countries.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine over the past year, piling up tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates. In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have been unsuccessful.

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
