The death toll rises to 34 from the sinking of a ferry on a river in Bangladesh, according to the latest report.
Six more bodies have been recovered and two of the passengers have been missing since Sunday when a ferry carrying about 50 passengers sank in the Sitalaksiya River south of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, after colliding with a cargo ship.
According to AMPE, the ferry “Sabit Al Hasan” sank shortly after his departure from the Narayanganj industrial district, about 20 kilometers from Dhaka, and on its way to the neighboring Munshiganj district, said Narayanganj administrator Mustafa Bila.
“Most of the bodies were found in the sunken ferry when it was towed ashore,” he said.
Police and officials said some of the passengers managed to swim to land.
The ferry was full of passengers rushing to leave the city after the government announced a week-long national lockdown, starting yesterday, with the aim of halting rising coronavirus cases.
Hundreds of people lose their lives every year in maritime ferry accidents at Bangladesh.
