“This is an act of war,” says Ukrainian Foreign Ministry

A spokesman for Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry described Russia’s military action on Thursday as an “act of war”, in a statement posted on social media.

“This is an act of war, an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a gross violation of the UN Statute and fundamental norms and principles of international law,” said spokesman Oleg Nikolenko.

Nikolenko said Russian troops had carried out attacks on “peaceful” Ukrainian cities in an offensive aimed at “destroying the state of Ukraine, forcibly seizing Ukrainian territory and establishing occupation control”.

“Ukraine is claiming its right of self-defense in accordance with international law,” the statement said, adding that the Ukrainian military stands ready to “repel the aggressor and defend the Ukrainian land with all its might.”

Nikolenko urged the international community to “act immediately”, calling for new sanctions to be applied to Russia and for military equipment to be sent to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

“The lives and security of not only Ukrainian citizens, but also the security of Europe’s citizens and the future of the world order depend on our united response,” the statement concluded.
