The enthusiast community has been developing a third-party open source Files file manager for a long time. In early October, it received a major update to v2 that brought many long-awaited features. It is noteworthy that the developers have added to it all those innovations that users expect from the standard “Explorer” in Windows: both the pre-existing tabs and fresh design according to the canons of Windows 11, and the column hierarchy, tags and themes. The update was noticed by the MSPoweruser edition.
One of the most noticeable visual changes is the new display of attachments in the form of columns. Such a solution will allow opening several levels of the folder hierarchy in one window at once. A similar solution is already used in other file managers – for example, in the Finder from macOS.

Also in Files v2, tags appeared in the form of tags of different colors, which make it possible to conveniently organize files in different folders.

The design themes deserve special attention – you can choose both ready-made (among which there are dark options), and create your own.
Other innovations in Files v2 include:
- Compact Overlay – the ability to display files on top of other windows to have quick access to them;
- FTP support;
- configuring security settings – the user can control access to files on the computer;
- grouping files by type, size, or date.
The new version of Files is distributed free of charge on GitHub and the Microsoft Store.
