“This is not a witch hunt,” says former Trump official involved in official documents case

Brian Butler a former Mar-a-Lago employee referred to as “Trump Employee Number 5” in the Donald Trump confidential documents indictment, spoke exclusively to CNN on Monday (11) about what he saw at the former president's private resort and the subsequent consequences following a search there by federal investigators.

Butler's interview with CNN provides new details about how he unwittingly helped move classified documents onto Trump's private plane — and about the pressure campaign that followed when he and others hosted Trump lawyers.

Butler said he was helping transport boxes to the airport at the same time Trump was greeting federal investigators at his property in June 2022, two months before the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago and a year before Trump was indicted. by special counsel Jack Smith for his alleged mishandling of confidential documents.

Butler told CNN who has not spoken to his former best friend – Carlos De Oliveira, who is one of Trump's co-defendants – since the indictment, and explained why he does not think Trump, his boss of 20 years, should be elected president again.

The boxes were leaving as the FBI entered

Butler described how, in June 2022, he helped Walt Nauta, Trump's personal assistant and another defendant in the case, transport boxes from Mar-a-Lago to the airport as Trump prepared to depart for his New Jersey resort during the summer.

This was happening at the same time, Butler says, that federal investigators were visiting Trump to discuss the return of classified material in the former president's possession.

“I realize now that at the same time he was going in there, the boxes were going from somewhere to a vehicle, which eventually goes to the plane, which I carry with Walt,” Butler said, noting that he had no idea at the time. of what was in the boxes.

Butler says he saw Trump when he was meeting with his lawyer, Evan Corcoran, and a group of people he would later realize were FBI agents.

“I was in the cloister outside, near the bar, and the former president was walking toward the room, as if he was going to enter the room,” Butler said. “He was with the Secret Service. I remember he said hi to me. 'Hello, Brian.' 'Hello, Mr. Trump' or 'President Trump'. And then he came in and talked to them, but I had no idea who these people were.”
