Insider Ben Geskin talked about an iPhone X prototype with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner on the back, which was considered for release in 2017, but never appeared.

About five years ago, Apple was rumored to be moving away from the traditional iPhone design with the Home button below the screen to one with smaller bezels. Then there were serious questions about how Apple would implement biometric user authentication. Apple eventually announced that it was moving to Face ID, but initial rumors suggested that the company would stick with Touch ID and add it under the display or place it on the back of the device.

At the same time, various images of the new iPhone smartphone were published with reduced cancers, a metal back panel, which housed a round Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

The detailed nature of the iPhone prototype leaks raised suspicions that Apple itself was behind the rumors, seeking to lower user expectations, whom the company later surprised with the announcement of the real iPhone X. It is also possible that such a case was actually tested for an early iPhone X prototype.
