At just 18 years old, Renato Venturini received advice from TV presenter and businessman Silvio Santos that changed his academic trajectory. Now 47 years old, the journalist and master of ceremonies told CNN who, before the presenter’s suggestion to pursue a career in communications, was thinking about studying law.
He remembers that in 1995, when he participated in the program “Quer Namorar Comigo” on SBT, Silvio praised the way he communicated. “He complimented him, saying, ‘You speak very well, you communicate very well,’ and then, when the recording ended, he said, ‘Keep going, this is your path,’” Venturini comments.
The presenter’s fan, who participated in several of the channel’s programs and was an extra in some soap operas, says that he decided to follow the presenter’s advice and decided to study journalism and advertising and propaganda in higher education.
According to Venturini, the presenter was very serious during the recording breaks, which he relates to his important role on the channel. “He was the boss, the owner of everything. So when the recording ended, he said in the corner, ‘What I said was serious, follow me. [ na comunicação ] that it will work out.’”
He also talks about what Sunday afternoons were like with his family, watching the businessman’s programs. “My Italian family’s Sundays were spent having pasta with Silvio Santos on TV, and he brought that joy to us on Sundays.”
For him, the feeling that remains due to Silvio Santos’ death is sadness, comparable to the loss of a member of his family. “The feeling in my house, with my mother, who is an 83-year-old lady, me, and my whole family here, is that it feels like we are losing someone in the family, a sadness from the bottom of our hearts”, he concludes.

TV host and businessman Silvio Santos died at the age of 93 at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo on the morning of last Saturday (17). He had been hospitalized at the institution since the beginning of August and, according to information from the hospital, the cause of death was “bronchopneumonia after infection with Influenza (H1N1).”
