This year’s drought was smaller in the North and Midwest, reveals monitor of Ana

The recent period of drought between February and March was milder in states in the North and Midwest, according to the Drought Monitor of the National Basic Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA). At the same time, the drought was more intense in the Northeast, Southeast and South of the country.

For the monitor, with the continuity of the above average rains, the drought improved in the northern region. The highlight was the drought in the center of Amazonas and the weak drought in Acre and Rondônia, which were partially free from the phenomenon.

In addition, in February and March, Amapá and Pará were free from the drought.

Regarding the Midwest, the monitor points out that, due to the “negative precipitation anomalies”, the moderate drought advanced in Goiás and East of Mato Grosso. And because of the improvement in the indicators, the weak drought retreated in West Mato Grosso and Northwest Goiano.

In the Northeast region, with the worsening in the indicators, there was expansion of the area with moderate drought in Bahia and Pernambuco, in addition to the aggravation of the drought period, which went from moderate to severe in southeastern Piauí, southern Pernambuco, west of Alagoas and Sergipe and Southwest and Northeast Bahia.

Drought retreat

On the other hand, the drought monitor points out that above average rains led to a decrease in weak drought in the center of Ceará and northern Maranhão.

In the Southeast region, with below average rainfall and worsening in the indicators, moderate drought was advanced in Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.

In the southern region, as a result of the persistence of below average rainfall, the advance of moderate drought in Rio Grande do Sul and the weak drought in the east and north of Santa Catarina and in the east and southern center of Paraná was noted.

The monitor also pointed out an aggravation of drought, which went from weak to severe in the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul and mountainous region of Santa Catarina, and from weak to moderate in the western Santa Catarina and southwest of Paraná.

“Considering the five geopolitical regions accompanied by the drought monitor, the Southeast had the mildest condition of the phenomenon in March, while the south had the most severe situation, with 22% of its area with severe drought. Between February and March, in the Midwest and North the phenomenon softened, while in the Northeast, Southeast and South the drought intensified during this period,” said the National Water and Basic Agency.

States

In the period between February and March, the states of Bahia, Paraná and Santa Catarina registered an increase in the area without rain. In Acre, Amazonas, Ceará, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Piauí, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins there was a decrease in the area under drought.

The situation remained stable in 11 states and the Federal District: Alagoas, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Sao Paulo and Sergipe. Between February and March, Amapá followed without drought and Pará was free from the phenomenon in March.
