ThorChain Decentralized Exchange Lost $ 7.6 Million As A Hack

The popular decentralized exchange ThorChain, whose main feature is the support of multiple blockchains, has been hacked. Hackers managed to withdraw 4,000 ETH ($ 7.6 million).

Initially, it was assumed that the attackers were able to withdraw more than 13,000 ETH, but later the ThorChain developers said that the losses were smaller. They also emphasized that they have sufficient funds to compensate users for losses, but urged hackers to return the funds in exchange for a reward for finding vulnerabilities.

“We have funds in our vault to cover the stolen amount, but we ask the attacker to contact the team to discuss a refund and a reward commensurate with the discovery of the vulnerability,” says the official ThorChain Telegram channel.

Hackers exploited a vulnerability in a bridge to the Ethereum network called Bifrost. According to the developers, Bifrost is a very complex smart contract, and this allowed hackers to discover and exploit the vulnerability. After the hack, the main ThorChain network was shut down. Funds will be refunded to affected users after the error has been corrected and the site resumed.

According to recovery plan, the developers will release a patch and restart the network. Then the ETH from the ThorChain storage will be credited to the liquidity pool and an automated tool will be launched to verify the correctness of the withdrawals. The developers have promised that they will conduct a security audit of the site.

As a reminder, the main Chaosnet of the ThorChain project was launched in April this year. At the same time, the site was already hacked last month, but then the attackers stole assets for only $ 140,000.
