The increase in cases of Covid-19 in Brazil was expected, according to infectologist at Hospital Sírio-Libanês Mirian Ben, in an interview with CNN Radio 🇧🇷
She explained that this escalation, registered in 20 federative units, is related to the Ômicron variants that had already caused an increase in cases in Europe.
“Two are of most concern, BQ.1 and XBB.1, are variants that escape the immune system even in those who have already had Covid, even those who had it in June or September have had it again”, he said.
Allied to the lack of use of masks, the infectologist warned of the fact that many people had not taken the booster dose: “This contributes to this scenario.”
“Those who took the fourth dose are 3 times less likely to be hospitalized than those who didn’t,” he said.
Mirian highlights that the vaccine “is doing the expected job”, since proportionally there are fewer deaths than we had in 2020 and 2021.
“We are seeing many serious cases, with hospitalization, in mainly elderly patients without the booster dose, which could have been avoided”, he pondered.
She recalled that 40% of the population did not seek a booster vaccine and argued that a series of measures are needed at this time to reverse this situation.
“We need the bivalent vaccine, which provides even greater levels of protection, in addition to reinforcing educational activities so that people get vaccinated.”
For this, the infectologist sees that expanding the operation of basic health units for vaccination on weekends would be a good measure.
