Thoughts in Germany on a travel ban abroad

The government is considering a temporary ban on trips abroad for holidays, following the great interest of Germans for holidays mainly in Mallorca, which was recently removed from the list of “danger areas”. However, it recognizes the “major constitutional obstacles”.

According to Deputy Government Spokeswoman Ulrike Demer, the relevant authorities arewhether it is possible to temporarily prevent travel to popular tourist destinations abroad, in order to avoid the risk of even greater spread of the coronavirus.

According to the first channel of the German public television ARD, during the cabinet meeting the Chancellor asked the Ministries of Interior and Justice to consider the legal possibilities of a ban, with the Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht says such a thing is “constitutionally impossible” to impose. Most likely, according to ARD, the obligation of negative test and quarantine will be introduced for those returning from any country. On the part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the spokeswoman Andrea Zase stated, however, as the correspondent of the Athens News Agency reports, that earlier a global travel directive had not been planned, as had happened last spring, during the first phase of the pandemic.

Lothar Wheeler, President of the Robert Koch Institute, also expressed his dissatisfaction with the issue, noting that “we can reduce the pandemic by reducing contacts as much as possible and mobility contributes to the spread of the virus – success will only come if we all participate». Mallorca was recently removed from the list of “risk areas”, which is compiled based on the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days. The relevant index for Mallorca fell below the limit of 50 and the area was automatically removed from the list.
