Thousands of Argentines take to the streets to protest after Kirchner attack

Thousands of Argentines took to the streets this Friday (2nd) to protest and offer solidarity after Vice President Cristina Kirchner was attacked at the door of her residence on Thursday night (1st).

The mobilizations took place in different central points of Buenos Aires, such as Plaza de Mayo. The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, declared a national holiday this Friday (2), for the country to meet in support of the vice president.

The national cabinet of Argentina participated this Friday in the mobilization called by the “Front of All”, which marched to Plaza de Mayo to demonstrate in favor of democracy and in solidarity with Vice President Cristina Kirchner.

In the communiqué of the Presidency, it was informed that “all Argentine men and women are invited to express themselves with Argentine flags, in defense of democracy and in solidarity with the Vice President”.

They also report that President Alberto Fernández has convened a meeting with “representatives of the trade union, social, business, human rights and different religions sectors to build a broad consensus against hate speech and violence”.

Vice President Cristina Kirchner was attacked at the door of her home in Buenos Aires, around 9 pm this Thursday (1).

According to the Argentine Federal Police, a Brazilian man, identified as Fernando André Sabag Montiel, 35, was detained. He is named by the police as the author of the shooting attempt.

Videos of people who were close to the crowd around the vice president captured the moment when a man points a gun at Cristina’s head and shoots. She reaches to bring her hands to her head, but the weapon misses.
