Thousands of dead fish collected from river in Greece; watch video

Cleanup efforts are underway on Friday (30) to collect thousands of dead fish from the tourist port in the central city of Volos.

Drone footage shows the river covered in fish:

An excavator stood on the riverbank loading the carcasses of the animals into a dump truck, while a group of workers set up a net to capture the dead fish.

Greek authorities began collecting the thousands of dead fish this week after they were displaced from their usual freshwater habitats during last year’s floods.

The fish created a silvery blanket over the port. A characteristic smell alarmed residents and authorities, who rushed to collect them before the odor reached nearby restaurants and hotels.

The animals were swept into the Pagasetic Gulf by the flood waters of Storm Daniel, dying immediately upon contact with the salt water.

Storm Daniel, the worst ever recorded in the country, flooded approximately 142 square kilometers near Lake Karla in the Thessaly plain last year, destroying homes, crops, irrigation systems and flood control channels.
