Thousands of demonstrators in Brussels against the far right

Around 4,500 protesters, according to police, took part in Brussels today in a “social and anti-fascist march” against the rise of the far right in Europe. Braving the rain, the demonstrators marched through the streets of the Belgian capital following an appeal by the “Anti-Fascist Coordination of Belgium”, a coalition of twenty organizations, to Luxembourg Square, in front of the European Parliament. During this march, the facade of the apartment building, which houses the offices of the far-right Flemish party Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest), was damaged. According to the Belga news agency, anarchist slogans were written on the entrance of the building, smoke bombs were fired at the facade and protesters overturned garbage cans. The European elections, held from June 6 to 9, marked a rise of the far right, particularly in France and Germany. In Belgium, the parliamentary elections, which took place on 9 June, marked the victory of the right and the centre-right.
