Thousands of Muslims in Istanbul prayed today Thursday (13/5) for Bairami in Hagia Sophia for the first time in decades.
This year marks the first time that Bairami is celebrated in Hagia Sophia, following a decision by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to turn the Hagia Sophia museum into a mosque.
According to dailysabah.com, only a few managed to pray inside the monument due to the restrictions on the coronavirus, while the rest prayed for Bairami for the first time after 87 years in the temple precinct.
The prayer was performed by Ali Erbas, the country’s supreme imam, who held a sword in his hand, symbolizing conquest.

Erbas said a special prayer for the Palestinians who are “under attack by Israeli forces.”
