Thousands of police officers outside the French parliament protested against the violence

Thousands of French police officers protested outside the French National Assembly today calling on the government to take drastic measures against violence against security forces and to impose harsher penalties on the perpetrators.

Some in the crowd greeted Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen, who made a brief appearance at the rally, in what he said was a show of support for police.

Police trade unions complain that the government does not protect police officers from everyday attacks against them, because some are afraid to do their work in some areas.

“This situation can no longer continue. You must protect us. “Things are getting worse,” a police officer was heard telling the French interior minister.

Police unions are calling for a minimum prison sentence for anyone who attacks a police officer. A banner held by the protesters read: “We are paid to serve, not to die.”

The mobilization took place after a police officer was killed during an anti-drug operation, while a police officer was stabbed to death outside the police station where he worked, both within a month.
