Thousands of protesters from across the country are expected to march on the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago this week, activists said at a press conference on Sunday (18).
“This is a national mobilization,” said Hatem Abudayyeh, a spokesman for the Coalition to March on the NDC. The coalition’s website says that “the March on the NDC will be a march for Palestine” and that the main demand will be an end to U.S. aid to Israel.
People are expected to arrive in Chicago by car, caravan, chartered buses and trains before the convention begins on Monday, Abudayyeh said.
Abudayyeh said the route for Monday’s (19) march that the city prefers protesters to take “is 1.7 km long. The route we want is 3.9 km long,” adding that the group will fight “to ensure that we have a longer route.”
He reiterated that if the city does not agree to a longer route at the start of Monday’s march, “we will march the [rota mais longa].”
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker told CNN on Sunday morning that his state and the city of Chicago are prepared for the CND and any protests related to the event.
“Honestly, I hope we have peaceful protests,” the governor said when asked about the possibility of demonstrations related to the Israel-Hamas war.
Abudayyeh said at the press conference, when discussing the war in Gaza, “Someone has to stop [a guerra].”
“If Kamala Harris isn’t going to do it, and Joe Biden isn’t going to do it… then the people have to do it,” he continued.
As pro-Palestinian groups prepare to march in opposition to Israel’s war on Gaza, within the NDC, expectations are more uncertain — with activists pushing the Democratic National Committee and Kamala to take a tougher stance toward Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
