Meta’s new social network, Threads, has not yet been made available in the European Union due to ongoing regulatory issues.
Launched by Mark Zuckerberg’s company – which already owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – to compete with Elon Musk’s Twitter, the platform already had 10 million users by the morning of this Thursday (6), just seven hours after its release.
Threads, however, still does not have a scheduled release date in Europe.
Regulation of digital platforms tends to be stricter in the European Union than in most countries. There are concerns about how much data Threads may collect about users, including location, contacts, search history, browsing history, contact information and more, according to the Apple App Store.
In addition, there are also concerns about how data obtained from one of Meta’s social networks could be shared and used on the company’s other social networks.
In May, Meta was already fined €1.2 billion by the EU’s main data privacy regulator for the company’s handling of information obtained from the user and was ordered to stop the transfer of data from European users to the United States.
At the end of last year, the EU approved the Digital Services Act (DSA) – Digital Services Act, in English – which proposes rules to regulate and increase the transparency of digital platforms, and is a source of inspiration for the PL of Fake News, discussed here in Brazil.
The legislation is considered one of the most advanced in terms of regulation of digital services, and is part of a movement to unify the digital market that has existed for years in Europe. Digital platforms that already operate in the block have until February 2024 to comply with the rules imposed by the DSA.
