Samsung has filed a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that describes a smartphone camera system with movable image sensors. They can move between lenses with different apertures. The source believes that such a system will be implemented in the Galaxy S22.
This solution will allow the user to change the aperture used for a particular scenario, depending on the lighting conditions. When you need to take a photo in the dark, simply switch to a wider aperture lens.
The new patent shows a three-camera setup with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telescopic modules, with each sensor being able to switch positions. The camera in the center can move up and down, while the other two sensors move horizontally.
In the standard position, the sensors are in line, but they can also move to form a triangle, while using other lenses. The Samsung Galaxy S9 was the first smartphone from the manufacturer to feature an interchangeable aperture lens (f / 1.5 for low light and f / 2.5 for bright light). However, in this smartphone, the function only worked with a wide-angle camera. Thanks to the new technology, all three cameras will be able to change the aperture depending on the lighting conditions.
