Three days in the Faroe Islands as environmental volunteers: how to register

Rugged cliffs, caves, spectacular waterfalls. We are in the Faroe Islands, one of the most unspoiled places in the world. These volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, halfway between Iceland and Norway, welcome around 110,000 visitors each year, attracted by the spectacular scenery of the country, with only 50,000 inhabitants and their 80,000 sheep

. The fragile natural environment in some popular tourist spots has suffered from an increase in visitors. These areas needed a helping hand to stay pristine. An initiative was thus launched in April 2019 in which during a weekend11 tourist sites were closed to the public, but remained open for anyone who wanted to help fix them

. In exchange for a hand, the volunteers thus received room and board for three nights.

Also this year, therefore, the closing days for tourists and opening days for maintenance work from 4 to 6 May 2022 are back.

Registration for next year’s maintenance work will only open on Tuesday 14 December at 11:00. Registrations will remain open for 24 hours and will close on Wednesday 15 December at 11:00.

Among those who have registered, 100 people will be drawn by lot. The entry time will not affect whether or not you are admitted to the maintenance team. There are no specific requirements to participate. But most of the projects will take place on uneven ground. Projects will be of varying difficulty levels, so just be fit enough.

The 100 people chosen at random and admitted to the maintenance crew will receive an email from Visit Faroe Islands on Tuesday 11 January that will contain a personal promotional code to pay for the flights. Participants will receive free accommodation, food and transport to the islands during the three-night period (Wednesday 4, Thursday 5 and Friday 6 May) and will work alongside the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands.

By 2022, around 10 popular tourist sites will be closed to the public. Here you will find more information and the possibility of registration.
