Three dead and 43 rescued in the English Channel shipwreck: Polar temperatures in Britain

Three people died and 43 have been rescued – so far – when a small boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of south-east England where very low temperatures prevail.

British government and emergency officials confirmed the incident was ongoing, with lifeboats, helicopters and rescue teams working with the French and British navies to deal with the incident, which happened at around 3.40am. m. (local time).

Temperatures have plunged across Britain in recent days, with snow falling in parts of the country.

“We are aware of the incident in British waters and all relevant agencies are supporting a co-ordinated response,” a government spokesman said. “Further details will be provided in due course.”
