Three Guantanamo detainees released with the approval of the White House – 73 years old the oldest

A White House committee has approved the release of three of the 40 detainees held at the US military base in Guantanamo.

It is the first such decision by the Joe Biden government.

Among the three detainees is Saifula Paracha, a 73-year-old Pakistani national, the oldest Guantanamo detainee today. He was arrested nearly two decades ago, along with hundreds of other suspects, following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

The other two detainees are Abdul Rabbani, 54, also a Pakistani national, and Othman Abdul al-Rahim Othman, 40, from Yemen.

“Today is not an ordinary day. Saifoula Paratsa, 73 years old, of whom passed 17 detainees unjustly, he will return home “, stressed Selby Sullivan-Benis, his lawyer, as broadcast by AMPE.

The criminologist noted that the release of the three detainees was approved on Monday by a competent committee of the White House.

According to her, their release will take place only in 30 days, while it will depend on the conclusion of agreements with their countries of origin.

Pakistan has already made it clear that it is open to receiving its nationals detained at Guantanamo. But the transfer of Yemeni prisoners often proves to be an extremely complicated affair, given the situation in the war-torn country of the Arab world.

As with most Guantanamo detainees, None of the three men had been formally charged.

Saifula Paracha, a former US-based businessman and import-export company, was abducted and arrested in Thailand in 2003. He was allegedly contributing to the financing of Al Qaeda, the terrorist organization accused of the 9/11 attacks.

Although he pleads not guilty and says he loves the United States, he remains in detention.

The forthcoming release of six other detainees has already been approved, five before Donald Trump takes office in 2017. But after the Republican took over the presidency, he stopped the process of releasing those detainees.

THE Joe Biden is under pressure to release detainees who have not been charged and charged and to proceed with the trial of those accused of belonging to al Qaeda or having links to it.

At the Guantanamo Bay prison on American soil in Cuba, up to 800 suspects had been detained. Among the remaining 40 are a number of indictees who allegedly took an active part in the preparation and commission of the 9/11 attacks and other terrorist acts for which al-Qaeda is blamed.

“I am confident that the Biden administration will ’empty’ the US military prison at Guantanamo” as far as possible, “Sullivan-Bennis said.
