Many industry experts and manufacturers themselves agree that the future of the automotive industry is with electric vehicles. And the record sales of the latter only confirm this.
Analysts at the Korea Institute of Automotive Technology (KAII) have calculated how many electric vehicles were sold globally in the first three quarters of 2021. According to them, over 9 months, electric cars have sold more than 3 million units. This is about the same as was sold for the whole of 2020.
China remains the leader in terms of the number of cars sold with electric motors with sales of 1.76 million units. The United States of America follows the Celestial Empire. During the reporting period, 272,554 electric vehicles were sold in the United States. In China, electric cars accounted for 9.4% of total car sales, while in the United States this figure is 2.3%.
Electric vehicle sales in Germany amounted to 243,892 units, in the UK – 131,832 units, in France – 114,836, and in Norway – 84,428. South Korea ranked seventh in terms of the number of electric vehicle sales. So far, the sales figures there lag behind the above-mentioned countries, but in comparison with the last year, deliveries have grown by 96%.
Tesla remains the leading manufacturer of electric vehicles. Between January and September 2021, Elon Musk’s company sold more than 625,000 electric vehicles. Tesla’s share of total sales has exceeded 20%, meaning that about one in every five electric cars sold this year has a T-badge. Tesla is followed by the Chinese state-owned auto maker SAIC Motor Corporation, which has delivered more than 413,000 electric vehicles. Volkswagen and BYS also showed good sales of green vehicles – over 287 and 189 thousand, respectively. Analysts named the Korean Hyundai Motor Group as the fifth largest manufacturer of electric vehicles. For 9 months of 2021, she was able to increase the sales of her electric cars by 67% to 159 thousand.
Electric vehicle sales are expected to continue to grow in the coming years. This is facilitated by the emergence of more affordable models, as well as an increase in the range and the development of infrastructure for electric stations.
