The sensation of chapped and pulling lips, the appearance of annoying “cuts” or, again, skins that bite them do nothing but multiply. These are just some of the effects of winter and the lowering of temperatures that are felt on lips.
Although often underestimated, many of the ingredients capable of nourishing and healing our lips are found at home. That’s why we asked herbalists Roberta and Francesca Forte, owners of the historic Campo dei Fiori herbalist shop in Milan, three natural recipes to create do-it-yourself remedies.
THE RECIPE FOR THE LIP SCRUB
«An excellent scrub is given by 1/2 teaspoon of almond oil, 1/2 of brown sugar and 1/2 of acacia honey. If desired, one or two drops of lavender essential oil, a true tonic of the dermis, even the delicate one around the lips (perilabial). At this point it is applied by massaging for two minutes, then rinsed. The lips will be soft and regenerated. It can be repeated twice a week “.28
THE RECIPE FOR COCOA BUTTER
«The best natural cocoa butter is given by 1/2 teaspoon of pure shea butter mixed with two drops of sweet orange or mandarin essential oil, rich in vitamin C which serves to “fix” collagen. They mix until you get a nice soothing and nourishing cream that can be kept in a glass jar for up to a week. If the lips lose turgor and begin to mark (the famous and hated “Barcode”), add to the shea butter two or three drops of vitamin E oil, excellent anti-aging and miraculous in restoring volume and youth ».
THE REMEDIES IN CASE OF NUTS AND CRACKED LIPS
“For cuts (fissures) or lips that crack (cheilitis) we have no doubts: Manuka honey wraps. It is a very precious honey, originally from New Zealand, rather expensive, which has virtues surprising antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and cicatrizing. It is usually recommended for internal use to help combat winter ailments or inflammatory states. But if used locally it is able to repair the tissues, heal and de-inflammation the dermis in no time! We recommend putting it pure on the lips at bedtime, like a balm, and keeping it all night. It must be honey at least 250 MGO, that is, with a concentration of metiolglossyl, a curative active ingredient, of this content. Obviously it is not recommended in case of diabetes! Cheaper alternative, a peanut of calendula cream with two or three drops of manuka essential oil that costs less ».
