Three men suspected of carrying out scams using the machine in the vicinity of the Morumbi stadium, in the South Zone of São Paulo, were arrested by the PM last Wednesday (24). A fourth suspect fled the scene, while the other three members were approached in a car on Comendador Elias Jafet Street.
According to the São Paulo Public Security Department, the group was approaching fans who were near the stadium to watch the game that took place on Wednesday night (24). Around 166 bank cards and six financial transaction machines with signs of tampering were with the group, according to the Police Report.
To carry out the scam, the suspects pretended to be street vendors selling drinks, and at the time of making the payment, the card inserted by the customer into the machine was changed by the criminals for a similar one.
Furthermore, as it contained signs of tampering, the machine used by the group for transactions allowed the suspects to gain access to the bank password of the victims of the scam.
Both the cards and the machines were seized by the Civil Police. The trio was questioned and released by the authorities. The four involved will be investigated for fraud.
The incident is being handled by the 89th Police District (Jardim Taboão), and at the time of the report there were no criminal charges against the suspects. Now, the investigation is trying to locate the victims of the scammers so that they can report the crime.
