Three people were killed and two injured after clashes with the police in Salvador

Three men were killed and two were injured in clashes with the Military Police (PM) on Thursday night (26), in Salvador, Bahia. The incidents were recorded in two different operations, launched in the Pero Vaz and Gamboa neighborhoods, both in the capital of Bahia.

The cases come amid a wave of police violence in the state that left more than 70 people dead in September.

Two dead in Gamboa

According to the Military Police, agents from the 18th BPM were called at around 9:30 pm after receiving information about drug trafficking by two armed men. When they arrived at the scene, they were shot by the suspects, and they fought back.

According to the PM, the criminals were taken to a hospital in the region, but did not resist.

A revolver, a pistol, 33 rocks of crack, 35 portions of marijuana and a precision scale were seized from the suspects. The case was registered with the State Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP).

In a statement, the Civil Police reported that the two are suspected of carrying out attacks against drug dealers from another faction. They would also be responsible for the death of a man, whose body was left in a dumpster on Avenida ACM. The case occurred on July 7th of this year.

Another case indicated that the same group was responsible occurred more recently, on October 11, according to the statement.

“A body in an advanced state of decomposition was found floating on Gamboa beach. Witnesses reported that the duo and other members of the same gang killed the victim, as she lived in a neighborhood where a rival faction operates,” said the Civil Police.

Death in Pero Vaz

Still on Thursday night, another Military Police operation also resulted in a confrontation. According to information from the PM, agents from the 37th CIPM were carrying out policing when they were called with information about armed men in the Pero Vaz neighborhood.

At the scene, the police carried out a siege, but were met with gunfire and retaliated. After the shooting, a man was hit and taken to Hospital Ernesto Simões, but he also did not resist. Two other suspects were rescued and remain in care. Their identities and health status were not disclosed.

During the operation, a 38-caliber revolver, a pistol magazine, ammunition, portions of drugs and a radio communicator were seized.

Second consecutive day with deaths in clashes

On Wednesday (25), a third clash between police and suspects left four people dead. The incident was recorded during an event in Bairro da Paz, in Salvador, after police officers received a report that armed men were trafficking drugs in the region.

According to the corporation, the police were met by a group of individuals who fired firearms, which began an exchange of gunfire. Four suspects were found injured and taken to Menandro de Faria Hospital, but died in the unit.

With the suspects, the police seized two 38 caliber revolvers, two 380 and .45 caliber pistols and 39 portions of marijuana.

Wave of police violence in Bahia

Since September, Bahia has faced a wave of police violence. According to data from the Fogo Cruzado Institute, the city of Salvador and its metropolitan region alone recorded more than 70 deaths during police actions in September 2023, generally in peripheral neighborhoods.

According to the police, the victims were predominantly linked to criminal factions or suspected of serious crimes, and the clashes recorded involved exchanges of gunfire.

In 2022, Bahia led the national ranking of deaths resulting from police intervention. According to the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook, there were 1,464 homicides recorded.
