Two unidentified suspects died after a confrontation with military police, on the night of last Monday (11), in the Jóquei Club neighborhood, in São Vicente, on the coast of São Paulo. During another incident in Baixada Santista, early this Tuesday (12), another suspect was also injured by police officers, in São Vicente, and did not resist. With the last three deaths, the coast now has a total of 43 deaths during clashes between suspects and the police in Baixada .
The two deaths that occurred in the Jóquei Club neighborhood occurred after police officers carrying out an operation at a drug trafficking point in the region heard gunshots.
The two armed men were reportedly located crossing a river that divides the neighborhood. According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP), upon seeing the police, the criminals pointed their weapons in the direction of the agents, who reacted.
Both suspects were hit. Another man, who was also at the scene, managed to escape. The pair were rescued and taken to the São Vicente Emergency Room, but they did not resist. Also according to the SSP-SP, the police located a pistol and a bag with more than a thousand portions of narcotics in the water.
Also on the night of last Monday (11), the Military Police responded to a fire incident on a bus, in Santos, where criminals set fire to the bus. Previously, the group would have demanded that everyone present in the vehicle leave the place. The Fire Department controlled the flames and forensics were called. The case was registered as fire. During the episode, no one was injured or killed.
In the early hours of this Tuesday (12), also in São Vicente, in the Itararé neighborhood, an alleged member of a criminal organization died after a confrontation with police officers. The police team reportedly raided the apartment where he lived after receiving an anonymous tip indicating his location.
According to the SSP-SP, the suspect resisted arrest and pointed a pistol at the agents, who intervened. He was hit, was rescued and taken to Vicentino Hospital, but did not survive. The case was registered as a death resulting from police intervention and attempted murder by the São Vicente Police Station. Also according to the SSP-SP, the criminal had previous convictions for robbery, criminal association, receiving and illegal possession of a weapon.
Deaths on the coast
In total, deaths on the coast already total 43 deaths, all as a result of police actions in Baixada Santista that claim to try to curb crime in the region.
Started on February 7, the 3rd phase of the Operation, created with the aim of stifling organized crime in Baixada, remains ongoing for an indefinite period of time. Since the beginning of the 1st phase, on December 18, 891 criminals have been arrested. Among them, 344 wanted by the courts.
Around 653.5 kilograms of drugs were seized and 90 illegal weapons, including restricted-use rifles, were collected as a result of the operation.
Regarding the number of deaths in the operation, the SSP-SP claims that all cases of deaths in clashes are rigorously investigated by the Civil and Military Police, with monitoring by the Public Ministry and the Judiciary.
