Three US aircraft carrier sailors die in less than a week

Three sailors from the US aircraft carrier USS George Washington were found dead in less than a week, the US Navy said, as the Naval Criminal Investigation Service and local authorities investigate the deaths.

One sailor was found unconscious aboard the aircraft carrier last Friday (15), while two others were found outside the base on April 9 and 10.

“While these incidents remain under investigation, there is no initial indication to suggest that there is a correlation between these tragic events,” the commander said. Reann Mommsen, a spokeswoman for the Navy.

The Navy did not provide a cause of death for any of the three, but the ship did bring a Special Rapid Psychiatric Intervention Team aboard. These teams are intended to provide short-term mental health support after a traumatic event such as loss of life.

The sailor found dead on April 9 was identified by the Navy as Retail Services Specialist 3rd Class Mikail Sharp and the one on April 10 as Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class Natasha Huffman.

The Navy has not identified the third sailor who was found unconscious aboard the ship last Friday.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends and shipmates of our sailors,” Mommsen said.

The USS George Washington is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. She is currently in Newport News, Virginia, where she is undergoing a complex refueling and overhaul, a one-time process to replace the ship’s nuclear fuel and refit it for future operations.
