Dead Azeros was found in Istanbul under unclear circumstances activist of the opposition Bairam Mammadov.
His friends wrote on social media on May 4 that the body of a member of Azerbaijan’s opposition youth movement NIDA was found “at sea” two days ago, according to APE-MPE.
One of Mammadov’s friends in Istanbul, Elgih Kahraman, told the Turan news agency that Turkish police were investigating the case and examining all versions.
Mammadov had become famous when on May 24, 2016, the birthday of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, together with Giyaseddin Ibrahimov, they wrote on the monument to the late former President Gaydar Aliyev the father of the new system! in English and the slogan “Happy Birthday to Slave Day!” in Azeri.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison
They then posted the photos with the slogans on social media. Hours later, the two activists were arrested on charges of possession of drugs and later sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Both denied the allegations. Mammadov said he was forced to plead guilty under the pressure of torture.
The European Court of Human Rights, in 2020 forced the Azerbaijani authorities to pay compensation to the two activists, because they were prosecuted on baseless charges and because they were “brutally treated in order to extract their confessions”.
Amnesty International described the two activists as conscientious objectors and that the prosecution of them was deliberately fabricated.
In March 2019, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pardoned Mammadov and Ibrahimov, along with an amnesty granted to more than 400 people convicted of criminal acts in Azerbaijan.
