Thrombosis at 18, Camilla did not make it. Change the vaccination campaign

Camilla Canepa was 18 years old. On 25 May he had participated in the open day organized by the Liguria Region for vaccination. She had been vaccinated with AstraZeneca which is currently recommended in Italy for those over 60, but not prohibited under this age. She was ill on June 3, died a week later of thrombosis, the family decided to donate organs.

The correlation with the vaccine is not ascertained, but the Prosecutor’s Office of Genoa he had already opened an investigation and is now opening a file for manslaughter against unknown persons.

Deputy prosecutor Francesco Pinto explained that “the necessary formalities will be carried out, starting with the autopsy and the collection of all the documentation including the vaccination process”. It is the same procedure followed in similar cases.

The 18 year old from Sestri Levante she went to the emergency room of the Lavagna hospital with headache and photophobia on June 3. She had been sent home after a negative CT scan. Two days later, when she showed up at the San Martino in Genoa, she had gotten worse and had a cerebral hemorrhage. The surgery to remove the blood clots and to decrease the intra-cranial pressure did not help her.

Camilla studied for high school and played volleyball. The mayor of Sestri Levante, Valentina Ghio, collects the condolences of the whole community: «I followed this tragedy day after day, the two interventions undergone by Camilla, the great concern of those who were close to her and which today is immense pain, difficult to manage. He leaves us a sunny girl, full of interests and friends ».

The batch of AstraZeneca used for its vaccination has already been withdrawn and for that of a 34-year-old woman from Savona. She also went to the emergency room with a severe headache and was operated on to remove abdominal thrombi. A debate has been open for days on the use of this vaccine in the Open Days for young people. From the doctors, but also from the governor of Liguria Toti, there is a request for precise rules. “If the CTS decides that this vaccine is not good,” said Toti, “I would simply like a clear and unambiguous communication to be made. The time for vague recommendations must end, which in fact leave the responsibility to the Regions, Aifa, the Ministry of Health and CTS must take a clear position ».

In the report of the Italian Medicines Agency on anti-Covid vaccines19 which collects the reports of adverse reactions collected between last December 27 and May 26 there are 21 serious events for every 100,000 doses administered, regardless of the type of vaccine. For AstraZeneca the reporting rate for intracranial venous thrombosis is 1 case for every 100,000 first doses administered, predominantly in people under the age of 60. The figure is in line with that observed in the rest of Europe. There are no reports after the second dose. However, the vaccination campaign with the AstraZeneca vaccine could change only for those over 60 years old and the booster made with other serums for those who have yet to do so.
