Three times more common in women than in men, the thyroid cancer It is considered the fifth most frequent in female people between 20 and 65 years. I have thyroid cancer: Will I get scar?

In addition to treatment, the most frequent question has to do with the scar. The ablation, a pioneering method held in São Paulo, leaves no marks. This is what explains the interventionist radiologist focusing on thyroid, Antonio Rahal, one of those responsible for the technique in Brazil.

“The ablation by thyroid radio frequency, besides avoiding surgery in many cases, leaves no scars, avoids general anesthesia, preserves the hormonal function of the gland and causes the patient to return to the normal activity of his daily life with immediate recovery and return of total activities in a few days,” he says.

Antonio Rahal also explains that the great benefit of ablation is the preservation of thyroid function, preventing the patient from needing hormone replacement and preserving the quality of life. “In addition, because it is a minimally invasive procedure, done under local anesthesia and a slight sedation, there is no need for hospitalization and the patient goes home around two hours after the end of the procedure,” says the expert.

The therapeutic option should be performed by interventionist radiologist and head and neck surgeons . In Brazil, Antonio Rahal is one of the pioneers in the use of treatment with another specialist, doctor Erivelto Volpi.

How is the ablation performed?

The high technology procedure is performed by introducing a thin nodule needle, ultrasound guided, and that through a high frequency alternating current generates tissue heating. During the days, it is expected that there will be a progressive reduction of up to 97% in the size of the nodule.

“Once this fabric is dead, it no longer grows and, on the contrary, begins to reduce by volume, by the body’s own absorption, as if it were a scar, where a devitalized tissue of the skin is gradually replaced by a new, healthy fabric. tumor disappearance or at least the replacement with a scar, with about 10% of the initial but without tumor, of healthy fabric, ”concludes the expert.
